Calheta


In Prazeres, the Quinta Pedagógica is another of the places to visit.
This is a project in the rural areas promoted by the local parish, which offers visitors a huge variety of teas, which may be consumed in the tea house at this place, and fruits that are consumed in the form of juices, jams and even liqueurs.

Located on the western edge of the island, this viewpoint to observe the immensity of the sea from the Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse which is on the site, Achadas da Cruz.

 

Cª Lobos

Down the road that goes from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos, towards the mountains, you arrive at Cabo Girão.

With a height of 580 meters, this is the second largest cable in the world. Dwell on the metal railing, it is an adventure to hold our breath. It offers a magnificent view of the sea, to Câmara de Lobos and Funchal.

The view is incredible and it is, especially for those who are afraid of heights, more enjoyable from the balcony overlooking the cliff.

In Cabo Girão you will find a panoramic lift that provides access to Fajã dos Padres, a lovely beach that includes a restaurant and access, which alternative can only be done by boat.

Also look for Rancho lift that takes you to Fajãs of Cabo Girão.

Funchal

Monte is one of the nicest places in Madeira Island.

With a prime location in the amphitheater of the Funchal city, in Monte, is located about 9 km from the center and 550 meters above sea level, is certainly one of the Funchal places to visit.

With lush vegetation and stunning views of the amphitheater and Funchal bay, has since the beginning of the tourism on the island, the choice for Madeira visitors.

Between Monte and Poiso you can find the Ecological Park, with about 1000 hectares. In this park you can see Pico Alto, in Ribeira das Cales, which is an excellent view over the Funchal city and Chão da Lagoa which will take you to the highest peaks of Madeira like Pico do Areeiro (1810 m) and Pico Ruivo (1862 m).

The Ecological Park was created in 1994 with the aim of developing projects t conserve the natural heritage of an area overlooking the city that is rich in fauna, environmental education and the creation of recreational to the general public.


Located on the highest area of the Funchal Ecological Park, near Pico do Arieiro, Poço da Neve is in fact an example of the architectural heritage of the Ecological Park.
It's like a stone igloo, built 1,600 meters above sea level, was once used to store ice caused by falling snowflakes and hail in the winter days.

The Selvagens are part of Funchal. Located about 163 miles from Madeira Island, consist of two groups of small islands, including most importantly the Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and the Ilhéu de Fora.

The Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) is a species endemic from Canary Island, Madeira and Cape Verde, but only few can be found growing naturally. It grows extremely slowly, usually taking about 10 years to reach 2 to 3 feet before bloom.

Pico das Torres is actually the second highest Madeira peak and is located between Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro at an altitude of 1851 meters.

Machico

This reserve is located in Caniçal, with 9 km long and 2 km wide, including the two islands: Ilhéu da Cevada e Ilhéu da Ponta de São Lourenço.

Between Porto da Cruz and Faial comes the viewpoint of Penha d'Águia, located at a height of 580 meters. Accessible by a path, this place offers fine views over the mountains and the sea.

Porto Moniz

When you visit Porto Moniz, be sure to visit the Madeira Aquarium.

The tank is installed in a building that is a replica of São João Fort, which had been erected there as defense of the locals from pirate attacks.

In the aquarium, you will have the opportunity to observe the diversity of marine species.

The Porto Moniz Live Science Center is a new space designed to host exhibitions and other events promoting science.

This center is part of the network of Living Science created by the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture and it is a wide spaxe where visitors of all ages can embark on a unique leisure to science and knowledge.

Chão da Ribeira, located in a large valley overlooking Seixal, is surrounded by a rich variety of plants and shrubs belonging to the Laurel forest.

The stream bed is occupied by farmland and houses tools, in a truly rural.

Porto Santo


For several years, Quinta das Palmeiras established itself as tourist attraction in Porto Santo.
Located on the site of Linhares, a hill west of the center of the island, this mini-zoo and botanical garden has to offer its visitors a wide range of bird species and plants.

It is a small haven of rare beauty, with clear waters and whithout white sand. It is said to have been the first place of the island where portuguese explorers set foot upon its discovery in 1418.

Improperly called "Pedreira" (a quarry), this rare columnar basalt form a set of columns and disjunctions prismatic several meters high.

Is located at one end of the Pico da Ana Ferreira, also famous for its caves.

On in this island, the largest of Porto Santo, was made the exploitation of limestone that was extracted after used for the manufacture of lime, the material used in the coating of buildings.

Source tragedies and livelihood, the longer in use today is one of the great natural attractions of the Ilha Dourada (Golden Island), and indeed in the process of implementing a proposed tourism site.

On the north coast of Porto Santo Island amounts Fonte da Areia (Source of Sand), close to the cliffs that dominate the rugged coastline.

The large amount of sand found there, as evidenced by the geological Porto Santo antiquity, much earlier than Madeira Island, was the reason that gave this name.

In Porto Santo is imperative to see and be at Ponta da Calheta, located on the southern tip of the island.
A narrow channel separates this site from the Ilhéu de Baixo, often the contours of the nearby rocky from the Madeira Island.

This site, located at the far west of the island, we can see virtually the entire Porto Santo Island.

Far, we can see the Desert Islands and Madeira Island.

Adjacent is the site of Moreno, pleasant place where they can be made picnics and other entertainment.

The landscape unfolds the Portela Viewpoint is also splendid.

This hill is in the east of the city of Porto Santo and save some old mills, once used to grind wheat and other cereals.

It is also this point that is best done the firework extravaganza.

In Pico do Castelo, whose highest point reaches 430 meters, we find the ruins of a sixteenth century fortress, in which the population took refuge during the pirates attacks.

Stone paths lined with pine trees are the only way to reach the peak, where you can enjoy a view of the whole island.

Near the top of this peak is the Schiappa de Azevedo bust, the driver of the afforestation of mountain until the first quarter of the twentieth century had been virtually stripped of trees.

Ribeira Brava

Fajã dos Padres is located on the south coast of Madeira at the bottom of the famous cliff Cabo Girão, the second highest in the cable world.

The name of this area comes from "Fajã" - a word that defines a flat, arable, small extension, located by the sea, formed of matrials given off the slope and "Padres" (priests) - this land once belonged to the Companhia de Jesus Priests.

Santa Cruz

The Reserva Natural do Garajau (natural reserve) located between Cais do Lazareto and Ponta da Oliveira, in Caniço, has an area of 376 hectares.
Due to its geographical location, biological richness and clarity of its water has unique conditions as a protected area with great interest the scientific point of view, recreation and tourism.

Located in Garajau, this statue, Cristo Rei, was inaugurated in 1927. This was raised because of a promise of the Advisor Ayres de Ornelas. The arms are raise / open, and seem a crucifix, but embrace and bless those who pass by the sea.
This statue is placed on a viewpoint that has a fabulous view over the Funchal bay.

São Vicente

The Volcanism Centre is located next to the São Vicente Caves, in the cliff opposite the São Vicente brook, in an enchanting village on the north coast of Madeira, at the bottom of the valley where the formation of the island began.
It brings culture and knowledge together with leisure and entertainment in a pavilion that allows 90 visitors at a time to watch audiovisual shows that recreate the geological evolution of the caves, the eruption of a volcano and a simulation of the birth of the Archipelago of Madeira in an educational and entertaining way.
This centre is designed to complement a visit to the Caves, using them as an example of the geological formation of Madeira. Serving as a centre for bringing together knowledge, it seeks to disseminate technical and scientific information.
The Garden is predominantly made up of endemic plants and is provided with a series of footpaths, where the elements of forest and waterways come together in harmony and seek to pay homage to water and to life.

In Encumeada, a place where the green takes on its most intense, focused nature of the man with a pleasant leisure area.

Visited by locals and foreigners, Chão dos Louros is a one-stop destination ofr hiking and many families seeking a healthy and restful living.

Every year this place fills with Pilgrims and beyond, taking advantage of the return of the camp of the Senhor Bom Jesus in Ponta Delgada, on the 1st Sunday in September, to make a healthy living for all.

These caves offers a visit very well organized, with a duration of about 30 minutes, conducted by specialized guides.

The visit suplements the repetitive monotony of a poorly diversified offer of vision, creating a mysterious journey, appropriately illuminated, referencing the music choice and some lighting magic architectures.

In the other side, the existence of small ponds of clear water and some cameras wider well integrated into the exhibition circuit produce images very beautiful and always allow you to join the caves, to the power and mystery of nature and in this case, to the volcanic convulsions leading to the Madeira Island.


Walking today between the village and the sea is a pleasure. Disruption of the old road, the dangers of sharing the space between pedestrians and cars are things of the past.

The Urban Park provides not only relaxing walks, as new spaces for recreation and gatherings for natural and outsiders.

Santana

The Parque Temático (Theme Park) in Santana, in the north coast of the island, open to the public in October 2004, is divided into multiple cores and includes many attractions for young and old - tourists and locals - from the history, traditions and culture of the Madeira locals.

Pico Ruivo (a peak), in Santana, in Madeira Island, is the third highest mountain in Portugal (after Ponta do Pico, Azores and Serra da Estrela, in mainland) and it's the highest in Madeira Island.

Not far from Santo da Serra, on the side of the island, lies this ideal starting point for trips. Ribeiro Frio, in Santana, is located in a place of great natural beauty in the Laurissilva Forest, a Natural World Heritage listed by UNESCO and still has much of its original vegetation.
Of particular interest in Ribeiro Frio are trout farms, as you see in the picture, which aim to produce trout to replenish the water of the Madeira Island. After the visit, nothing like a good trout prepared in a local restaurant.
